The basic rules of Texas Hold ‘Em at an online casino are simple but the actual game takes a life time to master. Currently it is the most popular poker game in casinos around the world. It is a community card game in which players share a set of cards and combine them with there own cards. There are anywhere from 2 to 10 players at a table and each is dealt two cards face down. These two cards combine with up to five cards that are dealt out face up.

The easiest way to look at the game is to start from the basics of the betting structure and work your way up. One player is considered to be on the button, which in game terms means that they are the dealer. The person immediately to their left is the small blind. The small blind is generally half the minimum bet at the table. Because of rounding issues some times it may not be but instead is rounded up to the nearest whole dollar. In some cases it is rounded to the nearest five dollars. To the left of the small blind is the big blind. This bet is equal to the minimum bet at the table. By having a blind system players are forced to put money down on a hand at intervals. At most cash tables the amount of the blinds will stay fixed. In a tournament structure the blinds will slowly increase over time forcing more and more action as time goes on. After the blinds are posted the cards are then dealt.

The first card goes to the small blind, then the big blind, then around the table clockwise. A standard 52 card deck is used. Each player is dealt two cards then betting begins. These cards, typically called the hole or pocket cards, are both dealt face down. Generally these cards will remain hidden until showdown, or in other words the point where you need to show your hand. The betting round before the community cards are dealt is called the “pre-flop” betting round. The player to the left of the big blind is the first one to act. This person has three options open to them: call the big blind, raise the big blind, or fold. After they act the action continues clockwise around the table until all bets are square. Depending on the limit at the table this will determine the amount that each player can bet in this and subsequent rounds. Some tables are no limit in that a player can bet as much money as they have chips at any time. This usually is reserved for tournaments only.

After all bets from the pre-flop are square the community cards are dealt. This starts with what is called the flop. Generally speaking the dealer will burn one card face down off the top of the deck then deal three cards face up. These cards can then be combined with the hole cards to make the best possible hand. This then begins a second betting round starting with the first person left in the game to the left of the button. If the small blind is still in the game they will begin the action. Once this round is square the dealer will burn another card then deal what is known as fourth street, or the fourth card in the community cards. This round can also be called the turn. This is followed by a round of betting starting again with the first player remaining to the left of the dealer button. A final single community card is then dealt after betting is square. Again this card is proceeded by the dealer burning off a card. This last card has one final round of betting. If more than two players remain in the game the cards go to showdown where each of the players that matched the final bet show their two cards and try to make the best hand with the five community cards. The winning player takes the entire pot. The rules for determining the winner follow the exact same rules as normal poker.

While on the surface it may seem to be a straight forward and simplistic game, in fact this is far from the truth. There are many different strategies on how to play the game. This texas holdem poker strategy will differ depending on the type of game that you are playing. Primarily there are three types of games: cash games, limit tournaments, and no limit tournaments. For each of these game types there are unique strategies that are effective. In a cash game consistent conservative play can pay off in the long run. You have to be willing to take chances and bluff now and again, but you can bide your time much better than you can in a no limit tournament. In this kind of event you have to be very careful not to get trapped and use controlled and exact aggression to attempt to trap other people. The best way to learn how to use these strategies is to read as much as you can on the different game types and play as often as possible. While playing on free web sites can be decent practice, for the most part the strategies used to win in these free games do not hold up as well when real money is on the line. Like anything else practice is what truly makes the difference.
